My friends I tell you this, we are a jolly group but put us in uniform and all that change. In war I don’t know who my brother. In war I don’t know who my friend. War make everybody savage. Who can say what lies inside the heart of each one of us when everything is taken away. Edna OBrien
About This Quote

The war in which the English fought the French was fought between 1689 and 1697. It began with attempts to impose religious uniformity on England, then quickly turned into a civil war that lasted until 1605. After the English Civil War, Oliver Cromwell ruled England for nine years. During his reign, he was known for his brutality and cruelty against the people of England.

He was also known to go against his own people in order to get what he wanted. When he died, Cromwell’s son Richard became king, but was unable to maintain control over England. The country fell apart during this time period and suffered through a period of anarchy.
